Beating the clock

Corporate work by rule requires completing variety of tasks within initially defined time frames, a.k.a. deadlines. However, the words ‘bohemian’ and ‘deadline’ hardly go together. It is a challenge to find these two in one sentence unless it says: ‘Bohemians dislike deadlines’.

How can an open-minded, free-spirited artistic individual survive and operate successfully in a world of deadlines? The answer is very simple: it’s all about motivation. If a person has strong motivation to achieve something, they would just get on and do it, regardless of external or internal constraints. This applies to all, bohemians included.

Each individual has their own motivational traits, and it is their own responsibility to make sure these are properly addressed at work. However, it is worth pointing out one common motivational theme which applies to most Corporate Bohemians – when it comes to these independent individuals, forget about the famous concept of ‘The Carrot and The Stick’*. Think about Carrots only, because no bohemian would fear the Stick!

And so, the clock is ticking, the deadline is approaching, panic and stress levels increase. Most people get really worried. What would a true Corporate Bohemian do?
Manage stakeholder expectations. Sit down, concentrate and do the job. Eat and sleep. /Listed in order of appearance/

It really is as simple as that. Remember to keep calm, but in case you panic ask yourselves the following questions: What’s the worst case scenario? How would that impact me? And if that happens – so what?! And here comes the moment when you smile and relax, as you realise that: a) you can handle any situation; and b) life is full of wonderful opportunities!

Time is running, Corporate Bohemians, so get back to work and beat that clock!

* ‘The Carrot and The Stick’ – if you’re not sure what this is, imagine a cart driver dangling a carrot in front of a mule and holding a stick behind it.
